Xoxokako eskola
School of Xoxoka
A neighborhood school that has turned 100 years old
1925-2025
1924
The people of the Goiburu neighborhood of Urnieta held a meeting. The children had difficulties in attending the Public School, since their place of residence was very far away and in winter the trip became very complicated. As a result, many girls and boys were not enrolled in school. After discussing the different options, they decided to install a small school in Kintalaenea.
On May 30, the Local Assembly for the Promotion of Education was established in the City of Urnieta, where it was decided that since the new school in Kintalaenea did not meet the minimum requirements, some solution should be sought.
After the City Council of Urnieta agreed to build a new building, the architect Antonio Setien was asked to to draft the project.
1925
On January 18, a neighborhood meeting was held to decide where to locate the new school.
On January 24, after deciding that the new school would be located in Xoxoka, the neighbors offered their help to assist with the construction work.
A letter dated February 12 states that the neighbors had accumulated in the area where the new building was to be built enough stones and sand (from the nearby Altzibar quarry) and beech wood (from the communal forests) for its construction, and that they were ready to begin work.
Although the budget was 20,694.57 pesetas, thanks to the auzolan (neighborhood work) and the subsidy of 4,000 pesetas granted by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the cost of building the new school did not reach 13,000 pesetas.
On July 2, the new school was inaugurated.
1936
Lighting was installed so adults could attend night classes, and at the same time, classes began to be offered to girls and boys as well, since the custom of attending night school was widespread in rural schools, as a result of many children spending all day working.
Academic year 1972-1973
At the beginning of September, Professor Pepita Campos retired at the age of 70 and the school was closed forever.
