The first mention of Santa Cruz hermitage in Azkorte, found at the foot of Buruntza mountain, dates back to1625.

The image of Christ on the Holy Cross, made of wood, dates from the 13th century and after suffering and witnessing many events (wars, theft and epidemics), it was returned to its true home for the opening of the new hermitage in 1973.
